Gothenburg Game Hub aims to deepen collaboration between its three main partners – Lindholmen Science Park, Science Park Skövde, and Business Region Göteborg – while building a stronger and more connected game development community in Gothenburg as a natural part of Sweden Game Arena. The initiative seeks to create better opportunities for both companies and talent.

As part of the Gothenburg Game Hub project, the partners will develop a strategy and roadmap for the long-term growth of Gothenburg’s games industry. The project will also create new opportunities for networking, knowledge sharing, and collaboration between companies, academia, and public sector stakeholders. Gothenburg Game Hub has received funding from the Västra Götaland Region and will run from March 2026 to February 2027.

Building on established initiatives

The Swedish games industry is one of the country’s fastest-growing sectors, generating annual revenues of more than SEK 34 billion. This rapid growth has also increased the need for long-term support structures, collaboration, and skills development to strengthen the games industry at a regional level.

Gothenburg Game Hub builds on experiences and insights gained through the regional initiative Level Up Regional Game Industry (2023–2025), which strengthened regional collaboration in areas such as innovation, entrepreneurship, talent development, and skills supply within the games industry.

Over the past two decades, Sweden Game Arena has built an internationally recognized games ecosystem and contributed to global successes such as Valheim, Goat Simulator, V Rising, and Raft. Gothenburg Game Hub represents the next step in this journey, with a focus on strengthening Gothenburg’s role as a key node within Sweden Game Arena and creating long-term opportunities for more game developers and game companies across the Västra Götaland Region.

“Västra Götaland has all the prerequisites to be a leading region for game development. By strengthening the connections between Gothenburg and the ecosystem that has been built within Sweden Game Arena, we can create even better opportunities for both startups and established companies,” says Jenny Brusk, Business Developer at Science Park Skövde and Project Manager for Sweden Game Arena.

Gothenburg has strong potential as a game development hub

Gothenburg has long been home to both successful game studios and strong educational environments, but today lacks a cohesive structure to support new and growing game development companies.

Games are not only a rapidly growing export industry, but also an important driver of innovation, creativity, and digital development. Technologies and expertise from the games industry are increasingly being applied in areas ranging from visualization and AI to education and industrial applications.

“We see enormous potential for continued development at the intersection of games and other industries,” says Hanna Blomdahl, Head of Media at Lindholmen Science Park.

Strengthens creative and technology-driven innovation

The initiative aims to support the growth of more companies while strengthening Gothenburg’s position as an important environment for creative and technology-driven innovation.

“The games industry is a powerful engine for innovation and creativity. It brings together technology, art, music, storytelling, and advanced digital expertise. Through Gothenburg Game Hub, we are taking a coordinated approach to strengthening Gothenburg as a city for game development,” says Rasmus Heyman, Business Development Manager at Business Region Göteborg.

During the project's first year, the focus will be on establishing collaborative working methods, conducting needs assessments, and developing a shared direction together with industry stakeholders, educational institutions, and the local game development community. The ambition is also to explore the possibilities of establishing a physical meeting place for game developers in the city.
