Melbe and Ideus were among the first in Science Park Skövde

Science Park Skövde celebrates its 25th anniversary this year! Over that time, a lot has happened: companies have come and gone, and a number of new buildings have been constructed to meet the demands of the business community. One of the entrepreneurs who has been around the longest in the science park is Jörgen Melbe with the company Ideus, experts in product development within electronics.

"It's amazing to have been part of seeing how Science Park has grown", says Jörgen Melbe.

Jörgen Melbe has been running Ideus since 1993. The company was founded after he had worked at SKF for a few years. After running his company for a few years, he heard that Science Park Skövde, then known as Gothia Science Park, was going to be established.

An idea he immediately got on board with.

"I felt it was an exciting concept that I wanted to be a part of. Right from the start, I received great support from Patric Eriksson, who started and ran the science park, and we became a small but close-knit group that had a lot of fun together", Jörgen Melbe recalls.

Initially, the companies were based in the yellow station house, near the railway crossing. In 2004, Växthuset was built as one of the large, initial constructions. Jörgen Melbe and Ideus moved there, and they have actually occupied the same office space for twenty years now.

"We like it here, so why should we move?", Jörgen says with a laugh.

He continues:

"At the beginning, everything was so small, and we received a lot of help from the science park and the other companies that were part of it. That network was invaluable when you were a relatively new entrepreneur, in context. Now, as we are more experienced, it's fun to see other companies grow and follow their journeys".

A company with international work

Ideus is a company that handles various assignments within electronics development, mainly in data and electronics. This includes embedded systems and software development, as well as the communication between these systems, such as various forms of measurement and warning equipment.

Over the years, they have worked with clients such as Siemens, ABUS Crane Systems, AstraZeneca, and LKAB. The various jobs have taken both Jörgen and his colleagues at Ideus to different corners of the world.

They have made measuring equipment for waste containers to optimize logistics and emptying, something that benefits both the wallet and the environment—under the company name Noticia. They have also, among many other projects, helped develop an exhaust purification system to reduce emissions from large ships.

"We have had the honor of doing many exciting jobs with great clients. Ideus always aims for quality, which is why our products take a bit longer to produce and deliver. We seek and work with clients who value quality over quantity".

What would you say is Ideus's identity?

"That we enjoy doing good work. We simply want to be good at what we do. We see it as our core mission to manufacture long-lasting products and solutions for companies passionate about the same thing. We've worked with some clients for as long as we've been at Science Park, which I think shows we're doing something right".

Another 25 years in the science park?

With 25 years as a member of Science Park Skövde, with memories and experiences that would take years to tell, the question must be asked — will there be another 25 years for Ideus?

"Haha, not for me! I don’t plan to work that long. But it’s been 25 fantastic years, and I’m grateful for everyone who has helped and supported us along the way. Our development has paralleled the science park's growth. The opportunities here have always been fantastic", he says.

What is the best part of Science Park Skövde?

"It was founded for the sake of companies and the business community, and it has continued to be so for 25 years. It’s fun to be part of all of this, and who knows how many have started their journey right here? I've learned so much about entrepreneurship and even about myself. Meeting other companies, regardless of the industry, has been invaluable. The social contact of being here has been very valuable for us.
